Rahul Gandhi: We Guarantee MSP For Farmers

The 31st day of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra commenced from Surguja, located in Udaipur, Chhattisgarh. Tribal communities predominantly inhabit this region. The road was lined with thousands of people eagerly awaiting the Nyay Yatra. The crowd was so dense that the Nyay Yatra bus had difficulty making its way through. Once again, the Nyay Yatris and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi opted for a roadshow, navigating through the crowd and interacting with the people. The enthusiasm among the crowd was palpable as the Nyay Yatra procession and Rahul Gandhi approached, accompanied by loud chants and slogans. Observing the fervor, Rahul Gandhi, holding a microphone, decided to adjust the schedule and walked amidst the people, engaging directly with them. As Rahul Gandhi now addressed people from the jeep, the enthusiasm towards him had intensified.

During today’s interaction, Rahul Gandhi invited a tribal man onto the jeep and inquired about the meaning of the term ‘Adivasi.’ In his subsequent speech, he delved into the issues concerning Adivasis and criticized the central government. He explained, ‘Adivasis live in the forest and need the forest, water, and land. They are called Adivasis because they were the original owners of everything here – water, forest, land. They are the original owners of India. The BJP has coined the term – ‘vanvasi’ (forest dwellers). Vanvasi means you are not the original owners of India, you have to live in the forest and cannot come out. If your son wants to come out of the forest, become a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, or start a business, they cannot. This is the Anyay against Adivasis.’

Following this speech, the Yatra continued. On the way, Rahul Gandhi met with demonstrators of Hasdeo Aranya and discussed their issues, assuring them of finding a solution. With the same massive crowd, the Yatra reached the Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at the Ambikapur Farmer’s Market. The sole purpose of this public hearing was to ensure that the concerns of farmers were heard. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Shri Jairam Ramesh inquired from the farmers to verify facts. This arrangement of two prominent Congress leaders demonstrated that Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is not just about informing people about the country’s situation but also serves as an open medium to understand people’s sentiments and the mood of the nation.

In today’s public hearing, Rahul Gandhi directly asked the farmers what the Congress Party should include in its manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This question came at a time when T.S. Singh Deo, the coordinator of the party’s manifesto committee, was also present at the hearing. The farmers unanimously demanded the immediate implementation of the formula provided by the Swaminathan Commission on MSP. Rahul Gandhi promptly acknowledged this demand. Apart from this, farmers raised several other issues, including the non-availability of loans on time, lack of storage facilities for produce, etc. Engaging in a detailed conversation with the farmers, Rahul Gandhi assured them that their concerns would be considered in the vision of the Congress Party, and he would personally talk to more farmers to understand and address their difficulties.

A unique feature of today’s Yatra was the commencement of the Nyay Virangana Yatra. Rahul Gandhi flagged off this Yatra and also had a brief conversation with the women who would lead this yatra. This group will accompany the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Uttar Pradesh.

The Yatra halted at the Narayani Complex in Ambikapur for the afternoon break. After the lunch break, Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed a massive public gathering. All prominent leaders of the state Congress were present at the event, along with hundreds of enthusiastic supporters eagerly awaiting to hear Shri Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. In this public meeting, the echoes of the atrocities against farmers at the Haryana border, near Delhi, were clearly heard.

The way the central government has suppressed the protesting farmers on the streets, manipulating MSP (Minimum Support Price), and ignoring their fundamental demands is astonishing. The authoritarian approach of the government is highly condemnable.

Addressing the public, Shri Kharge launched a scathing attack on the central government. He stated, ‘Today, Modi is practicing a politics of destruction everywhere. When we announced five guarantees in Karnataka, our government came. Later, by giving six guarantees in Telangana, we formed our government. Seeing us, Modi now talks about guarantees everywhere. On the first page of newspapers, Modi writes his guarantees, and we speak of Congress guarantees. We speak for the people of the country, he speaks only for himself. A person with so much arrogance, can you imagine him having faith in democracy? No. He works only for himself. One who works only for himself is a dictator, works like Hitler. Such a person does not have faith in democracy. Modi is Jhooton Ka Sardar.’

Shri Kharge did not stop there. Speaking about MSP, he assured people on behalf of the Congress party, saying, ‘I want to give a guarantee on behalf of my party. This guarantee will start from Chhattisgarh. The Congress party announces that we will provide a legal guarantee of MSP, along with extensive procurement of crops, for the farmers of the country. We guarantee the purchase of farmers’ crops at MSP. This is our first guarantee. Apart from this, if there is any other issue for the farmers, we will sit down and discuss it, making efforts to resolve it.’

After Shri Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed the public. He said, ‘The BJP government has given Bharat Ratna to Swaminathan Ji. But for the thing for which Swaminathan Ji devoted his life, for the farmers of India, for whom he worked hard, what he said, the government is not ready to do. What does this mean? Swaminathan Ji clearly stated in his report that farmers should have the right to MSP. The BJP government is not doing it. So, I want to reiterate what Kharge Ji said here, that when the government of India comes, we will give MSP guarantee to the farmers of India, fulfill what is written in Swaminathan’s report.’

After the speeches in the public meeting, the Nyay Yatra caravan proceeded towards Rajpur. Night accommodation arrangements were made there.
