Day 19: Rahul Meets Beedi Entrepreneurs

Sujapur, Malda, witnessed the commencement of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra with the same enthusiasm today. At the beginning of the Yatra, Shri Rahul Gandhi chose to ride in a jeep instead of a bus. The procession, accompanied by thousands of people, passed over the historic Farakka Barrage. The Farakka Barrage is situated just 10 kilometers from the border of Bengal and Bangladesh. Construction of this barrage began in 1961 and was dedicated to the people in 1975 by the then Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The barrage has 109 gates that regulate the flow of the Ganges and the Hugli rivers, facilitating navigation. Congress General Secretary Shri Jairam Ramesh posted about the Farakka Barrage on his X (Formerly Twitter) account.

During the Yatra, Shri Gandhi stopped in front of a beedi (cigarette) manufacturing unit. He engaged in conversation with the women working there, learning about their concerns and listening to their stories. Congress General Secretary Shri Jairam Ramesh and Shri Gandhi also tried their hands at making beedis.

For the lunch break, the Nyay Yatra halted in Raghunathganj. Once again, people gathered to welcome the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Afterward, the caravan stopped in Piarapur, Jangipur, for lunch. Congress General Secretary Shri Jairam Ramesh addressed the press conference during the lunch break. He clarified that the INDIA Alliance stands firm against the BJP in West Bengal.

Shri Ramesh stated, ‘The INDIA alliance holds a special significance in the context of the Lok Sabha elections. The West Bengal Chief Minister has repeatedly said that she is and will remain in the INDIA alliance. Congress Party welcomes this statement and Congress Party also wants that Trinamool’s target is BJP, Congress Party’s target is also BJP. Currently, BJP has 18 seats in Bengal, We want to reduce it to zero. That is why the INDIA alliance has been formed.’

After the lunch break, the Yatra proceeded from Lal Gola Netaji More, Murshidabad, towards Berhampore. Berhampore is the parliamentary constituency of Shri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the Pradesh Congress President. Here, the public created a human chain on both sides of the road to welcome Congress leader Shri Rahul Gandhi. People were everywhere, to the extent that the Nyay Yatra convoy could barely move.

The unexpected crowd also posed a challenge for security personnel to manage. However, as people gradually joined the Yatra, it moved towards Nabagram Kishor Sangh Ground for overnight rest. The arrangements for the night stay for the Nyay Yatra caravan were made at this location.
