Day 15: We Want You To Achieve Your Dreams

After a brief hiatus of two days, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra (BJNY) recommenced today. The day’s journey was slated to kick off from Siliguri in West Bengal. Congress leader Shri Rahul Gandhi arrived at Bagdogra Airport in the morning. Following a short break, the roadshow was initiated. Similar to the enthusiasm witnessed in the northeastern states, a sizable crowd gathered with Shri Gandhi in Jalpaiguri.

Shri Gandhi’s padyatra was planned in Jalpaiguri, but the heavy crowd and congested roads compelled him to proceed with the roadshow, sitting atop a car roof. This roadshow stretched from Jalpaiguri to Kadamtala Chowk. Following this, a bus journey from Jalpaiguri to Siliguri was initiated. Throughout the entire roadshow, a multitude of thousands accompanied Shri Gandhi. The atmosphere along the whole route was celebratory, with people lining both sides of the road, perched on the roofs of houses, and climbing trees, each eager to catch a glimpse of Shri Gandhi. Even shopkeepers left their stores open, joining the procession. The robust support from the people of West Bengal has presented a formidable challenge to the BJP.

Several individuals associated with the organisation, ‘No Vote for BJP’, met Shri Gandhi during the journey, vehemently opposing the BJP and its agenda. They also expressed their disapproval of the divisive politics practised by the BJP and RSS.

Representatives dedicated to developing and uplifting the people of North Bengal also met with Shri Gandhi. They presented a memorandum to Shri Gandhi highlighting the issues of North Bengal and providing detailed insights into the challenges faced by the residents.

Workers from the tea gardens, engaged in demanding labour, also had an opportunity to interact with Shri Gandhi. They shared their challenges, including meagre wages and exploitation by contractors.

Upon reaching Siliguri, Shri Gandhi and Bharat Jodo received an enthusiastic welcome for their Justice Yatra. A procession moved through thousands of people. Although Shri Gandhi was initially scheduled to undertake a padyatra here as well, upon witnessing the size of the crowd, he had to once again take a seat on the roof of a car and continue the journey by road. In Siliguri, a group of local artists welcomed Shri Gandhi with the traditional beats of the dhak. This group walked about 2 kilometres in the roadshow ahead of the procession. The reception by the people of Siliguri left everyone astonished.

Senior Congress leader and General Secretary, Shri Jairam Ramesh, shared on his X (Formerly Twitter) handle about meeting some special individuals- ‘One of the highlights of an immensely successful Day 15 of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Siliguri was running into the local Bar Association who staged a demonstration of their vision of justice — impartial and balanced. After 10 years of Anyay-Kaal, our vision of Nyay is finding resonance across the country, for people from all sections of the society.’

Upon reaching Siliguri, Shri Gandhi once again conducted a roadshow. Here, too, there was an eager crowd ready to join the Nyay Yatra, with a massive gathering of people of all ages, including youth, elderly, women, men, and children, lining the roads. Addressing the crowd from the roof of a car, Shri Gandhi strongly criticised the injustices of the BJP government. He stated that the sole aim of the Congress party is to ensure that every youth can fulfil their dreams. He said, ‘The owner of Toyota company in Japan was once a mechanic. But he worked hard and gradually built his own company. However, in India, this cannot happen. If a mechanic has such a dream, people will make fun of him. We want to make India a place where the dignity of those who work is respected. But nowadays, those who indulge in Dalali have respect, and those who work do not.’

Shri Gandhi also highlighted the significant contribution of the people of Bengal to India’s independence movement. He called upon the audience, stating, ‘Bengal holds a special place. When the struggle against the British was underway, the people of Bengal made ideological contributions. This means that you are intellectual individuals, people who walk alongside others. Therefore, it becomes your responsibility to guide the nation. As Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Swami Vivekananda did, now it is your turn. And for this, you do not have to fight alone; you need to work together to bring about a transformative change.’

Shri Gandhi thanked the people present there for the enthusiastic and loving welcome they gave to the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. He expressed gratitude, saying, ‘I will not forget this reception throughout my life.’

After this, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra convoy set off towards Sonapur in Uttar Dinajpur for the night’s rest.
